Over 2000 users working remotely around the world in a secure and cost effective environment

Department for International Trade (Formerly UKTI) sits between the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and the Business Innovation and Skills Department (BIS). Their main objective is to promote the UK as a brilliant place to invest and a great business partner to have as well as helping UK based firms to export.

Secure Global remote access

By its very nature Department for International Trade is a very mobile organisation however its systems were fixed to desktop computers which left staff little flexibility. Communication between staff was difficult and access to web services was unreliable.

DIT chose a mobile solution that would work anywhere in the world while maintaining security integrity at all times. Microsoft Office 365 offered all this with the added bonus of being affordable and allowing integration with a SharePoint intranet for improved file sharing around the world. Desktop computers were replaced with laptops or Surface Pro tablets.

Operating for DIT in Japan I had struggled to use the desktop systems and keeping up to date with everything, especially when I had been out of the office for a few days. With the new system I can keep updated on the move and have faster access to the documents I need no matter where I am.

The solution is built on Aurora utilising Microsoft Office 365 offering anywhere anytime email and document access on the provided laptops or tablets. Combining the best of Microsoft with the DIT’s own suite of web services. Communication has also been improved with Microsoft Lync making time-zones more fluid and allowing all staff to see who is available at any one time.

Mobile working, improved communication, faster access to CRM and the ability to work much more efficiently no matter where you are around the world are just the key highlights that DIT have seen from its ground breaking move to the cloud.

Following a G-Cloud tender process which saw DIT shortlist 15 companies; Core were chosen as the preferred partner, not just because they offered the best value but because they could demonstrate clear and complete understanding of the DIT vision with a sound technical knowledge and the ability to foresee issues.

As ambassadors for the UK it’s vitally important that the technology we use in our day to day operations paints a picture of Britain as a progressive, advanced nation. The Cloud system with Core and the Microsoft suite of products has allowed us to achieve that in a very cost effective manner whilst delivering a host of productivity improvements
